The capital city, Bhopal, grows around two lakes—the Upper Lake and the Lower Lake—and it somehow blends old textures with newer ones. You’ll find the Taj-ul-Masjid, often listed as one of Asia’s largest mosques, and the older city bazaars for bangles and handicrafts, not far from the state’s more modern museums and science centers. One standout that a lot of visitors miss is the tribal museum, but somehow people move past it.

Sanchi
A little outside Bhopal, Sanchi keeps India’s oldest surviving stone structures, including Buddhist stupas that were commissioned by Emperor Ashoka back in the 3rd century BCE. The Great Stupa, famous for its carved gateways, or Torana, shows scenes from the Buddha’s life and also earlier incarnations. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of those super peaceful historical stops in India.
Ujjain
Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, and it’s also the place where you might walk into the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, which is often counted among the twelve most revered Shiva shrines. The Bhasma Aarti takes place before dawn and instead of usual blooms and water it makes use of sacred ash. Also, Ujjain is on the Kumbh Mela spot so it keeps picking up extra spiritual resonance, year after year, almost without break.

Gwalior Fort
Gwalior Fort pretty much takes over the skyline, standing up from a steep sandstone hill and just owning the view. A Mughal emperor once called it “the pearl among fortresses in India,” and the description fits.
